: Hospital and Clinic Project Experience :
Humla District Hospital - UNICEF
The Humla District Hospital Solar Project, supported by UNICEF and executed by Peak Power as the local installation partner, represents a transformative advancement in healthcare infrastructure for this remote Himalayan region. Located in Simikot, the district headquarters of Humla, the hospital serves a population of 50,858 across an expansive area of 5,655 km², making Humla Nepal’s second-largest district by area. The district's northern region is predominantly inhabited by culturally Tibetan communities and has gained prominence as a preferred route for pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash in Tibet.
In this challenging setting, where electricity access is limited, the integration of a solar power system has become essential for ensuring reliable and clean energy supply. This project significantly enhances healthcare delivery by providing uninterrupted power for critical services such as lighting, operation of essential medical equipment, and vaccine refrigeration. By strengthening the hospital’s capacity to deliver continuous and high-quality care, the solar project contributes to improved health outcomes for communities in one of Nepal’s most isolated districts.

Dolpa District Hospital - UNICEF
The Dolpa District Hospital Solar Project, funded and supported by UNICEF Nepal, represents a transformative step toward improving healthcare services in one of the country's most remote and challenging regions. Located at the Dolpa District Headquarters in Karnali Province, near the historic Nepal–Tibet trade route that dates back to the Silk Road era, the hospital serves as a critical lifeline for local communities. Due to its high-altitude terrain and extreme remoteness, reaching the site requires approximately five days of travel by 4WD vehicles.
Peak Power was engaged as the local installation partner, entrusted with the complex task of transporting all equipment to the site, carrying out the installation, and commissioning the solar power system. This project has provided the hospital with a reliable, sustainable energy source, ensuring uninterrupted medical services and significantly enhancing the resilience of healthcare delivery in Dolpa’s challenging environment.

Mugu District Hospital - UNICEF
The Mugu District Hospital Solar Project, supported by UNICEF and executed by Peak Power as the local installation partner, marks a critical advancement in strengthening healthcare delivery in one of Nepal’s most remote regions. Situated in Chhayanath Rara Nagarpalika, Mugu, the hospital directly serves a population of 15,339 within a 7 km radius and supports over 55,000 people across the wider district. Due to the lack of road infrastructure, many patients reach the hospital on foot, by porter, or even on stretchers, underscoring the vital importance of reliable medical services. Frequent power outages and voltage surges from the main electricity supply have historically disrupted service provision and damaged essential medical equipment. In this challenging Himalayan setting with limited electricity access, the integration of a solar power system has become a crucial solution, providing reliable and clean energy to power lighting, essential medical devices, and vaccine refrigeration. This project not only ensures uninterrupted healthcare services but also significantly improves patient safety and health outcomes, reinforcing the hospital’s capacity to serve as a lifeline for the community.

Gorkha Hospital
Gorkha hospital is located in the Gorkha region of Nepal, the hospital is close to the main city and connected to the metro-grid but does not have reliable power and relies heavily on Diesel Generator. The project was scoped and designed by the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) to implement an AC coupled PV system which could power critical loads during day time directly from PV with some storage to cover night-time loads and delivery some autonomy.
The project was executed as a JV between Sunshine Energy and Peak Power and we delivered the system based around Victron Energy Quattro platform and SMA AC coupled PV inverters. Once the system installation was completed, there was an extensive re-wiring process to integrate the inputs and outputs from the renewable-based power system into the existing hospital electrical network. This system had some technical design gaps which we were able to address during the project and work through with the Hospital engineering staff. The result was a better integration of the grid and generator inputs with a full system bypass, as well as extensive distribution network rewiring and rebalancing.

Dhulikhel Hospital Outreach Centre - Bahunipati
The Bahunipati clinic services the local region where grid is unreliable but not as bad as some of the other clinics, it is almost impossible for a clinic to run any medical or IT equipment in these locations so reliable and clean power is a must.
For this site which was one our first with Dhulikhel Hospital the budget determined SMA AC coupled PV with battery inverter, battery bank consisting of 48v 200AH 12v cells, we included our custom switchboard which has bypass, surge protection and low impedance earthing.
We also re-wired existing distribution wiring to enable protected loads circuits and grid fed circuits, with all essential lighting and equipment be moved to protected loads. Although these solar PV systems made a tremendous difference to the clinic being able to service the public the lack of budget really limits the impact we could have on the clinic.

Dhulikhel Hospital Outreach Centre - Phalebas
The Phalebas clinic services the local region where grid is horrible, it is almost impossible for a clinic to run any medical or IT equipment in these locations so reliable and clean power is a must.
For this site the budget determined SMA AC coupled PV with battery inverter, battery bank consisting of 48v 200AH 12v cells, we included our custom switchboard which has bypass and surge protection and low impedance earthing.
We also re-wired existing distribution wiring to enable protected loads circuits and grid fed circuits, with all essential lighting and equipment be moved to protected loads. If the battery SOC is low, the system can be connected to grid, however these remote sites always have high impedance connections so in reality you might be lucky to get 180v and a couple of amps out of it. This is why designing system to be sustainable with PV and Battery is essential, unfortunately budget dictates the design.

Dhulikhel Hospital Outreach Centre - Manekharka
The Manekharka clinic services the local region where grid is almost useless, it is almost impossible for a clinic to run any medical or IT equipment in these locations so reliable and clean power is a must.
For this site the budget determined SMA AC coupled PV with battery inverter, battery bank consisting of 48v 2v cells, the site had a much cleaner distribution system than others similar clinics so we installed simple bypass option with a small switchboard, quality breakers and SPD’s.
We also re-wired existing distribution wiring to enable protected loads circuits and grid fed circuits, with all essential lighting and equipment be moved to protected loads. This system is a lot more reliable and robust due to the battery bank design and capacity. We also completed a PV extension at this site to increase the solar and PV inverter capacity at the request of the clinic. This system was reliable and works very well for the clinic.

Dhulikhel Hospital Outreach Centre - Dorpu
The Dorpu clinic is in a very remote region, it is difficult to travel and access this site requiring a 12-hour car journey over rough roads ... but the location is amazing. The local grid conditions are interesting, the site is very near to a large Hydro power station which provide clean but unreliable power.
We also re-wired this building extensively as the wiring in the building was extremely badly done not to mention missing earth to all circuits. We also ran 3 phase circuit for the x-ray machine. Although the site has close proximity to the Hydro station the grid connection was high impedance and almost impossible to synchronise with.
We did not recommend this design to Dhulikhel Hospital at the time due to the requirements of the loads on the batteries, not to mention the remoteness of the site and the cold winter would be tough on those batteries, unfortunately the budget was not flexible to scope 2v deep cycle batteries which would have been a lot better.
